The Buddhist Council of Victoria (BCV) celebrated 20 years of incorporation on 25 March 2017 at Quang Minh Buddhist Temple in Braybrook.
It was a great day opened with Acknowledgement of Country by local Aboriginal Elder Francine Ngardarb Riches followed by speech by speech by Maribyrnong Mayor Cr Catherine Cumming. The President of the BCV Ajahn Boonsom spoke followed by the Victorian Minister for Multicultural Affairs Minister Hon Robin Scott and shadow minister Inga Peulich.
The BMIN was represented by committee members Colin Reynolds, Nayran Tabiei, and Cecil Schmalkuche attended our information table. We had a chance to meet members of many Buddhist temples as well as representatives from the Islamic Council of Victoria.
One Sunday 12 March 2017 over 30 people from across Melbourne have joined us in visiting the Yen Ming Tang Buddhist Meditation Centre in Albion. We were able to witness Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva Birthday and enjoy lunch including a birthday cake at the centre. Following this visit we visited the St George Serbian Orthodox Church in St Albans. Rev. Borislav Petrovic gave an introduction to the church and answered many questions from the guests. After visiting the Church we were invited to the community hall where a Serbian traditional dancers performed a dance for us.
Brimbank City Council hosted the International Women’s Day event in collaboration with the Brimbank Maribyrnong Interfaith Network, at CommUnity Plus in Deer Park.
More than 60 people attended the event which included panellists: Hon Maria Vamvakinou MP, Brimbank Deputy Mayor Cr Georgina Papafotiou, InterAction Director Nivy Balachandran and Transformative community leader Ms Nayran Tabiei.
The event promoted interaction and understanding between individuals and communities of different faiths but also to promote gender equality by celebrating and recognising interfaith women's leadership. 'Be Bold For Change' was the theme for 2017 International Women's Day.
